Chessical: Tarrasch plays aggressively against Marshall's first string defence for this match (games: 2,6,8,10 and 12) - the French.

Marshall had been an infrequent defence French player, it appears that he had decide to widen his repertoire as from 1905 -1912 he used it regularly for tournaments and match play including the Lasker-Marshall World Championship Match (1907).

Unlike game 2,Tarrasch vs Marshall, 1905, Tarrasch avoids the McCutcheon French, McCutcheon (C12) variation of which he had a high opinion and uses a Steinitz plan of e5 (Opening Explorer). This decision was vindicated with Tarrasch scoring +2 out of 4 with this line in the match.

Tarrasch castles Q-side and sets up a K-side pawn attack, but Marshall plays methodically to equalise. Tarrasch then suprisingly overlooks a little tactic after playing <16.cxd3?!>.

This allows Marshall to win a pawn by <19...Qxe5> .

Tarrasch's imprecisely played opening gives Marshall the advantage, but he is not able to maintain it. He plays on the K-side passively rather than engaging in Q-side play by advancing his <a> and <b> pawns. Marshall seems at a loss for a positive plan. <27..Qb6> followed by <29...Qd6> achieves nothing.

<35....Rd7?> is a blunder (<35...Qb6>) which at once hands the advantage and intiative to Tarrasch. It allows Tarrasch to post a Knight powerfully on <e5> and treaten both Marshall's bishop on <g6> and the <g> pawn behind. To save the Bishop, Marshall loses his <g> pawn and control of the 7th rank; his King is put in jeopardy.

<51... d2!?> does not save Marshall either, 52. Rd5 Be4 53. Rbd7 Bxd5 54. Rxd5 Rg2 55. Kb1 Rxh2 56. Kc2 d1=Q+ 57. Kxd1 Kg7
