Plaskett: Lyubo had a huge plus at move 23.
Feb-15-25  keithbc: Ljubo also has a huge plus at the end (2 rooks vs 2 knights) and agreed a draw, presumably due to the tournament situation that a drew suit him - lucky Portisch.
Feb-15-25  FM David H. Levin: Despite the material advantage White would obtain by 41. Bxf4+ gxf4, his exposed king seems to present considerable technical difficulties. The best try then seems to be 42. Rg1,

creating a door for White's king to head toward the kingside. Then it might go 42...Qd3+ 43. Ke1 Nc2+ 44. Kf2 Nxd4

45. Qg4 Nxe2 46. Qxe2 Qd4+ 47. Kg2 Ne5,

when Black has a pawn and the initiative for the exchange.

Given that the draw was agreed without White's even playing 41. Bxf4+, I wonder whether Ljubojevic sealed that move, could not find a win during adjournment, and agreed to a draw before the game would have resumed.

  beatgiant: I think White would want to keep the d-pawn for better winning chances. To that end, I'd suggest 41. Bxf4+ gxf4 <42. Qg6> Qb3+ 43. Rc2 Qxa4 44. Kd2.

After Black takes on c2, he has a pawn for the exchange and White's king is still a bit exposed, but the attack is fading and it's hard to hang onto all his pawns. I'd say White is in a good position to play for a win.

Feb-16-25  Olavi: According to Suetin in the Sovjet tournament book 41.Bxf4 was sealed.
Feb-16-25  FM David H. Levin: Thank you for that information, <Olavi>.

42. Qg6 was my first thought also. After 41. Bxf4+ gxf4 42. Qg6 Qb3+, my notes from yesterday give only 43. Kc1. I'm not sure why I rejected 43. Rc2. That aside, I think Black needs to try to put the f-pawn to work, as in a line like 43. Rc2 Qf3+ 44. Ree2 Qf1+ 45. Kd2 f3

46. Re7 Nxc2 47. Qxc2 Qg2+ 48. Kc3 Qg3.

Maybe White has a way to make progress from here or earlier, but it seems well-hidden (at least to Ljubojevic and to me).
