Oct-02-18  goser: What a sharp finish! As the engine suggests, Kan could equalize with cold-blooded 42... g6!

nizmo11: Levenfish in <Voronkov> [from the tournament book?] on move 37. One of the best combinations I've ever managed to create over the board. The idea of combination - deflection [41. f4 ] and interference [42.Bf5] - had only occurred in problems before, not over-the-board games. The main line [42...g6!] leads to an end game that required a precise calculation."

His main line goes, also given in his <Selected Games, 1967> 42... g6! 43. Re8+ Kg7 44. Rxa8 gxf5 45. Rxa6 c5 46. a5 Ne4 47. Ra7+ Kf6 48. Ne8+ Ke6 49. a6 Rf1 50. Rh7 Ra1 51. a7 Ke5 52. Re7+ Kf4 53. Nc7 Nf2 54. Nd5+ Kg4 55. Rg7+ and mate in two.
But "Long analysis, wrong analysis", Black's play can be improved.

Interestingly it seems 41. f4! deflection was the strongest move, but with the idea of answering to 41...Rxf4 42. Be2! and compared to 41. Be2 Black don't have move 41...Rd8.
