Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-12-06  refutor: very nice win by Kotov during his record setting performance.

After 40.Rf8

"Kotov recalled Alekhine's complaint that often an opponent keeps you from demonstrating the depth of your combination. Here on 40. ...Rbg7! White could have reeled off a gem of calculation. 41.Rd1! a2 (or 41. ...Rxf8 42.Qxg8+ and 43.e7!) 42.e7 a1=Q! 43.e8=Q Qaa2 44.Rd8 Qab3 45.Qa8 Q2a2 and now with four queens and four rooks on the board they disappear quickly with 46.Rxg8+ Qxg8 47.Qxa2 or 46. ...Rxg8 47.Qe5#

Black cheats Kotov by allowing an immediate win" (Soltis)

Jun-14-07  mack: Tim Krabbe mentions the fantastical continuation in <refutor's> post in his latest diary entry:
Apr-20-15  Howard: And Soltis also alludes to this game, as a "near miss" in his book of the 100 best games of the 20th century.
