plang: 8 Nf3 had been played in Najdorf's win over Botvinnik at Groningen 1946; 9 f3 was new. Kotov was critical 9..cxd?! saying that it leads to a good endgame for White despite his lack of development. 22..Red7 23 Bh3..a6 24 Rb6..Rc8 25 Rc1 would also have been strong for White. After 30 g6! Black had no good options.

Instructive game from start to finish.
