Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-01-04  Ernesto7: Black should have drawn with better play..

32..Be5?? is a blunder that comes at a bad time..

A difficult ending regardless.

Jul-03-06  KingG: 32...Be5? was bad, but not as bad as 35...Kd5??, which blunders into a mate in two. Instead 35...Kb5! would give Black some chances of drawing.

But White missed some opportunities earlier. For some reason, he was reluctant to take the g-pawn. For example 16.Bxg4 Bxg4 17.Qxg4+ would give White the better endgame after either 17...Qd7 18.Qxd7+ Rxd7 19.Nxa7+ or 17...Kb8? 18.Rae1! Qd7 19.Qxd7 Nxd7 20.Bg5 Rc8 21.Rxf7.

It was even stronger to take the g-pawn later on with 21.Bxg4! and Black is lost. For example 21...Nxc3 22.Qe1! Bxg4 23.Bxd8 Kxd8 24.Rxg4

Mar-20-14  estrick: The first part of this game is featured as the very first column in the 14th and 15th editions of Modern Chess Openings. Not sure how representative the moves in this game are of the Kieseritzky Gambit. After just nine moves, there are only five games in the CG database which follow the same course as this game. 9. Be2, which was played in this game, is far less common than 9. Qe2.

My 1976 edition of ECO gives 9. Be2 in a footnote with no continuation, and an evaluation of "=".

By the time eleven moves have been made, this game is unique.

I wonder if de Firmian thought that this game represents the cutting edge of theory for the Kieseritzky?
