If he doesn't take the rook he's just down a piece for nothing, so falling on his sword is perfectly appropriate.

  Dionysius1: Very interesting that SF shows the black Q can get back to defend against mate on g7 by the sacrifice of the f8 rook and a series of checks with Q, leaving black "just" down a piece for a pawn.
