Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-21-05  sneaky pete: Staunton was no Morphy or even old MacDonald. First he misses the "your pieces or your life" sequence 17.Qc7+ Ke6 18.Nb5 .. when the forced move .. Rd8 will only postpone the mate. Next, after 17.Nxd5+ Ke6, he overlooks 18.Nf6 .. threat 18.Re1#, still an easy win. When black refrains from the best defence 18... Kd6 (19.c4 f5) and plays 18... Kd7? 19.Qe7+ Kc6 he finally fails to find 20.Nb4+ Kb6 21.Qd6+ Nc6 21.Nd5+ .. winning. In the end, the great Staunton is dependant on NN's crowning blunder on move 21.
