Aug-16-02  MorphyFan: Could somebody help me, (night, bishop, sneaky)? Couldnt white have won with 17. Qg5+? Was that an oversight, or was chess not that good back in his day? youngMorphyfan
Aug-16-02  pawntificator: Good eye, MorphyFan. I believe that would have won it for white. After that black must lose the queen...it must have been an oversight, AND chess wasn't that good in his day.

Sneaky: 17. Qg5+ is mate in three:

17 ...Kh7 18. Rf7+ Qxf7 19. Rxf7#
or 17 ...Qg6 18. Rf7+ Kg8 19. Qxg6#

My guess is that Black played ...Kg7?? to intend to answer Qg5+ with ...Qg6. And then White believed him! So who's the bigger dummy?!

Jul-26-09  just a kid: Bad game from White's point of view.

dernier loup de T: ...Perseverare diabolicum: 18.h4 and also 18.R1 f5 would have got the mate again...

dernier loup de T: And 19.Rf7+ Kg6 20. h4 +- would have been less easy to see for White, even it was a quick win also... Similar story after 20.Qh4 instead of the useless. ...After 23...Be6 instead of ..Bd7, it seems that Black can force a draw; because after 23..Bd7, 24.e5 would have won once more for White..
