Jun-18-12  AngeLa: ..nice model games, done by magnus at tal memorial 2012 McShane vs Carlsen, 2012 congratz magnus, & kudos to luke ^^
Jun-19-12  darshandatta: A great positional masterpiece.
Jun-19-12  SimonWebbsTiger: a game I always think of when I see the delayed exchange, like yesterday in the aforementioned Carlsen game.
Jun-19-12  darshandatta: I wonder in Carlsen knew about this one. He also used the positional ideas that Keres applied
Jun-19-12  SimonWebbsTiger: @<darshandatta>

I would be mightily surprised if Magnus didn't look at this game. Nobody becomes nr 1 without hard work and study to augment their natural skills.

Oct-08-16  zydeco: Impressive. Black's the only one playing.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

fredthebear: Kere's Plan: Restriction 9...c5! (SF is less impressed than I am. Black will make use of his space advantage with a sliding rook along the sixth rank.) Take aim at weak pawn(s). Invade; threaten tied defenders of the weak pawns.

Black masterfully shifts his attack from the backward d-pawn to the isolated a-pawn to the backward f-pawn and unprotected e-pawn. All the while, the White pieces sit on guard duty, trying not to get hit by invading minor pieces. This never-ending pressure was most unpleasant for White.

Black's use of pins for simplifying to remove the last of the major pieces into a won pawn ending is artful as well. Once again, Keres shows his tremendous ability to make use of his queen as the board opens up! It's good basic fundamental chess, leaving the opponent with no counterplay.

fredthebear: This appears to be a fine collection of Ruy Lopez Closed variation games. Paul Keres is well represented in here. Game Collection: Chess in the USSR 1945 - 72, Part 2 (Leach)

FSR: The preceding comment was the great <Phony Benoni>'s last. Presumably later the same day, he suffered a broken hip after being struck by a motorized wheelchair being operated by one of the residents at the retirement community where he lived. On June 25, he died as a result of a bacterial infection.

Position after 20.Ne2.

McShane vs Carlsen, 2012 after 22.Rd1.

Black plays ...a4 in both cases. Looks like White should have played c3-c4 in response, but neither man did, at least not at once. McShane never played it.
