Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-13-04  Whitehat1963: Excellent game on both sides in the opening of the day.
Oct-14-06  Recoiler: Usually, Kasparov's innovations are later in the game!
Mar-14-07  GreenCastle: 37...♘d3+ would have won the exchange decisively, but instead Kasparov played 37...♖c5?? which loses a ♖ outright, but the rook wasn't taken!

Must be a notation error.

FSR: 3.c3 and 3.c4 are considered the best responses to the O'Kelly Variation (2...a6). 3.d4 is generally considered inferior. Interesting that Kasparov played 6...d6, transposing to a Najdorf, rather than the theoretical 6...Bb4.
Aug-24-24  areknames: 3.c4 is the right move here. In the final position though I don't see any problems for White after 40.Rf6

  FSR: <areknames> The final position isn't after 40.Rf6. The game concluded 40...Ng4 41.Rc6 Rxg5 42.Rc5 Rxc5 43.Nxc5 Kg8 44.b4 Kf8 45.Ke2 Ke7 46.b5 Ne5 47.Ke3 h5 48.Kd4 Nd7 49.Nd3 h4 50.Ke3 f5 51.Kf4 Kf6 52.c4 Ne5 53.Nb2 0-1. I can see that, but apparently you and some others can't - probably because the game score is malformed, with no period after "40". I will submit a correction slip.

perfidious: I too have encountered some difficulties with scores I have submitted which were not picture-perfect; the slightest typo will truncate the score.
Aug-25-24  areknames: <FSR> Thanks, the problem seems to have been fixed now. It is still a bit surprising that White's game went downhill that quickly.
Aug-25-24  Granny O Doul: I assume GreenCastle's comments above are based on an earlier incorrect score. As it appears now, 39... Rd5+ looks like a key improvement.
