Honza Cervenka: Great battle of two heavy weights! Karpov's pressure was terrible and he probably had the win in hand but Smyslov survived. Maybe 44.b5 Rc5 (44...Rb8 45.c4) 45.Ra7 Nd6+ 46.Kd3 Ndc8 (46...Nec8 47.Rh7 ) 47.Bxe7 was the right solution.
Mar-31-15  Everett: These guys forgot the "draw in 20" message from the authorities.

perfidious: <Everett> Unlike some other encounters, where the memo came early: Smyslov vs Karpov, 1976.
Apr-24-16  Howard: According to the Informant, Karpov did indeed miss a win, but I don't recall the exact spot.
Oct-21-16  Howard: Just looked it up last night--42.c4 Rb8
43.b4! would have won for Karpov.

Rather ironic that in Karpov-Smyslov game from earlier that year--in the Leningrad tournament--it was Smyslov who missed a win that time.

Oct-21-16  NBZ: What's the idea after 42. c4 Nd6+? Is it simply Kf3 and then keep pushing the pawns?
Oct-21-16  Olavi: Yes, there's not much black can do.
Jun-22-19  carpovius: 22.f4!!
