Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-18-12  Travis Bickle: Karpov couldn't beat Larsen in '77 with his positional hit and run. Fischer would have destroyed the young Karpov.

Penguincw: Often the case, one open file=all rooks off the board.
Feb-18-12  RookFile: Ok, I'm sure that Larsen and Karpov noticed the e4 pawn as being unguarded, emerging from the opening. What terrible thing happens to Karpov if he takes it?
Feb-18-12  sneaky pete: I think on 9... Nxe4 10.Nxc6 Qxc6 (if .. d/bxc6 11.Qd4 ..) 11.Nb6 Rb8 12.Qd4 .. is intended. It doesn't look very pleasant for black.
Feb-18-12  King Death: Karpov played the Taimanov a lot in the 1970s and I'm sure he knew that White gets a lot of play after 9...Ne4 10.Nc6 Qc6 11.Nb6 Rb8 12.Bf3 0-0 13.Qd4. It would be stronger to play 12...f5 13.Qd4 Bf8 but I'd hate to play Black here.

Here's a game where Black grabbed the pawn a move later and got killed for her trouble: J Sammour Hasbun vs I Zenyuk, 2009. Granted Zenyuk didn't have to go down this fast but I don't trust this for Black one bit.
