Feb-21-03  ughaibu: When did the Caro-Kann become so popular? There was a time when everyone was embarassed to play it because Petrosian was fond of it.
Feb-21-03  refutor: in the 70s when Karpov used it successfully to defeat spassky...even kasparov used it in the early 80s
Oct-03-08  orio24: The reason Larsen gave up: 43. ..♖bd7+ 44. ♔c2 (44. ♔c2?? ♖e4#) ♖e4 45. ♖h1+! (45. g3? ♖e2+ 46. ♔b1 ♖h2) ♖h4 46. g4#.
Oct-03-08  Woody Wood Pusher: Did Larsen think Karpov was just handing out those pawns for free! LOL

Botvinnik made frequent use of the Caro-Kann, and was quite successful with it against Tal.

Oct-04-08  drukenknight: You talk about those days like it was yesterday but it was more like 40+ years ago..

You lost me dk. How am I talking like Botvinnik-Tal was yesterday? The question was when did the Caro-Kann become so popular, and I'm simply saying that its popularity goes back at least as far as the early '60s.

Oct-05-08  drukenknight: Because ugi said, "when did the C-k become so popular.." and referring to Petrosian. That was a long time ago really.
Sep-14-19  Capatrosian: Don,t forget a great Caro Kann player: Capablanca!
Sep-14-19  Retireborn: Indeed Capa was one of the small group of masters (Nimzowitsch, Tartakower, Reti) who made the C-K respectable in the 10s and 20s. In the 30s they were joined by Flohr, since then quite a wide range of people have played it.
Sep-15-19  Granny O Doul: Larsen must have been totally free of spite to have refrained from that spite check.
Nov-14-20  fisayo123: 42. Rbb7?? 43. Rc1!
