Jan-12-04  ughaibu: Here's Capablanca using Ne8, the first example from his games in this database.
Sep-14-06  notyetagm: <ughaibu> Yes, this is -the- stem game for the line with 12 ... ♘e8!, a brilliant opening innovation by Capablanca.

The move 12 ... ♘e8! accomplishes three goals:

1) Black simply sidesteps the powerful pin ♗c1-g5

2) Black e8-knight can pressure White c4-pawn/c4-square from d6

3) Black can meet an eventual f2-f4 with ... f7-f5, blockading the kingside

John Emms writes about this move in "Easy Guide To The Nimzo-Indian": <Not often can so much be achieved by a single move, never mind a knight retreat to the back rank!>

Oct-31-18  Howard: You apparently mean 10...Ne8, not "12...Ne8".

Jonathan Sarfati: In the game Botvinnik vs Reshevsky, 1948, Reshevsky made use of Capablanca's strategy of ... Ne8.

Botvinnik wrote about the following about his loss in his autobiography Achieving the Aim. He had just beaten Smyslov with black (Smyslov vs Botvinnik, 1948) to reach a big early lead of 8/10:

“But in the next round a frightful blow awaited me. To my shame I did not know a certain opening system in the Nimzo-Indian Defence which had been introduced by Capablanca of all people. I maintained the equilibrium with difficulty in this game with Reshevsky, but then the tension got to me and I lost. An unpleasant defeat—I had just been arguing that Reshevsky was not dangerous and now this.”

Penguincw: A NPPP vs. NP ending is won by the superior side 87.2% of the time, and drawn just 12%.

Endgame Explorer: NPPP vs NP

It is the highest winning percentage of all xPPP vs. xP endings, where "x" represents a piece (king, bishop, knight, rook or queen).

Feb-03-19  zanzibar: The bishop stats might also like to be broken down into "same-color" and "opposite-color".
