White has just played 35. Nf3-g5. This threatens the ♗e4, the ♙d6 and there is a potential threat of Nf7+ in the future. Janowsky was unable to calculate which of these threats was the most serious so he decided to let Marshall try all of them at once.

He played 35...Rxd4 and lost the exchange and the game.

35...Bf5 looks a reasonable alternative.
