Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-18-11  ughaibu: This is the longest draw between these two players. I'd like to ask "why?" but I'm not sure that it's a meaningful question. So, in the spirit of erotetic exploration, I'll ask; is 'why is this the longest draw between these two players?' a question?

SteinitzLives: I will answer your question albeit nine years later. This was a match that transcended chess. Soviet hegemony vs Western values. The fact that Keres was hardly pro-Soviet shows he might have been concerned about what might have happened to him if he lost. In this same match, Spassky was 1.5 - 1.5 w/ Larsen but got yanked and Stein stepped in for him (and lost).

Perhaps just from a chess game perspective, one can say Keres was the better player in both tactics and endgame skill, which this game lent itself to, and he refused to give in. Ivkov saw the chance to take a Russian (er . . . Estonian) scalp and perhaps there was a bit less pressure on Ivkov, so why not play on.

As was written of that encounter (do not recall the source): 'Larsen, smouldering, beat Stein'.

It could have been Smokey Bear or Lauren Bacall, but I'm pretty sure it was <Profile of a Prodigy>.
