DaltriDiluvi: In the final position, White is winning if he plays <41.h6!>. Black is in zugzwang and cannot stop White from marching forward with <Kh4-g5> and <f4-f5>.

beatgiant: <DaltriDivuli> I was looking at that but the win looks like a lot of work after 41. h6 <e5>.

For example, 41. h6 e5 42. fxe5+ Kxe5 43. Kg5 Be6 44. Be8 Bg8

45. Bxg6 hxg6 46. Kxg6 Kf4 47. Kg7 Kg5 48. Kxg8 Kxh6 49. Kf7 Kg5 50. Ke6 Kxg4 51. Kd5 Kf3 52. Kc6 Ke3

53. Kxb6 Kxd3 54. Kxc5 Ke4

From here both sides will queen and White has the extra c-pawn for a book win. Having seen all that, would Black resign here or make White demonstrate this win?

DaltriDiluvi: Your line is correct, <beatgiant> - it's much harder for White to win than I thought. I'm guessing that the game was adjourned after move 40; maybe Ivkov saw the line during the adjournment and trusted that Larsen would be able to find it too? In a modern-day setting where everything is played out in one go, resignation would certainly be premature.
