  agb2002: Too recent.
Jan-08-18  patzer2: As Yogi Berra famously said "It's deja vu all over again." Hoping for a great NCAAF championship game tonight. Go Dawgs! Roll Tide!
Jan-08-18  Sularus: same as my solution last xmas :D
Jan-08-18  jith1207: Early groundhog day! Does that mean this winter is going to be too long?

Once: I feel a song coming on...

Last Christmas, I gave you my rook
But the very next day, I mated you anyway.
This year, to save you from tears,
I'll give you the same position.

Willem Wallekers: Serves me well, last Xmas I was too busy to visit cg. ;-)
Jan-08-18  malt: As <agb2002:> Too recent.
Jan-08-18  morfishine: <31.Rxa3+> just like a couple of weeks ago

Reminds me of when Francisco Franco died in 1975. He lingered so long on his death bed that seemingly for weeks his impending death was reported; when he finally died, it was reported on a daily basis for weeks that 'He's still dead'

Jan-08-18  PhilFeeley: We've seen this motif before: ...Rxa3+, then Ra8+ & Rxa5# (after the queen falls on her sword).

  Bubo bubo: Black opens the a-file, for mate-in-three: 31...Rxa3+ 32.Kxa3 Ra8+ 33.Qa5 Rxa5#
Jan-08-18  Patriot: <morf> LOL! I enjoyed your story and I can see the analogy. Good to see you again!
Jan-08-18  morfishine: <Patriot> Glad you got a chuckle out of that one & good to see you too! Normally, <CG> would quickly replace the POTD in these duplication type situations, I guess not today

White to play and win from M Pestalozzi vs D Duhm, 1900.

Just for fun, you all are welcomed to go ahead and post your own Monday puzzles. Maybe we'll find some good ones to use later in 2018.

Jan-08-18  AlicesKnight: Nice'n'easy - 31....Rxa3+ mates in 2 more moves. Did we see something similar recently?
Jan-08-18  Olsonist: The problem could have started a move earlier and maybe it'd still be a Monday.
Jan-08-18  whiteshark: <31...Rxa3+!>, and that's it.
Jan-08-18  Cheapo by the Dozen: A lot of my kibitzes are to the effect "This would make a good Monday puzzle".

Most of those are on speed games. :)

Jan-09-18  patzer2: What a game! Alabama defeats Georgia in overtime 26 to 23 to win the national championship on a touchdown throw by true freshman Quaterback Tua Tagovailoa.

fredthebear: <patzer2> The Alabama Crimson Tide were down 13-0 to Georgia at half-time. A lineup change was made and the freshman backup QB Tagovailoa was inserted for the dramatic second-half rally.

The following season, Clemson defeated #1 ranked Alabama 44-16 in the CFP National Championship. The Tigers recorded the most wins in a single season for Clemson, 15-0. Freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw for 347 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Tigers' rout of the Crimson Tide. It was Clemson's second national title in three years and the third in school history.

Alabama's Tagovailoa was injured in late fall of the 2019 season. The national championship was won by Louisiana State University, who defeated 'Bama in the regular season. LSU beat defending champion Clemson 42-25 behind the record-setting passing of Heisman trophy winner Joe Burrow to complete a perfect season on January 13, 2020.

Now we're all up to speed on the recent college football national champions. Tagovailoa, Lawrence, and Burrow all figure to become outstanding professional quarterbacks in the National Football League. Which one will be drafted highest?

Superb sacrificial corridor/lawn mower mate here with an assist from the Black queen! 27.Nxa5? helped Black more than it did White.
