May-21-04  ConLaMismaMano: Amazing finish by Ivanchuk! Why didn't he take the Bishop in move 21?

  tpstar: <CLMM> 21 ... fxg3!? trades Q for R&B after 22. Rg4+ Kf7 23. Rf4 gf+ 24. Qxf2 or 22 ... Kh8 23. 0-0-0 Rf7 24. Rh1+ Rh7 25. Rxh7+ Kxh7 26. Bd3+ Kh8 27. Rg6. White had to play 21. Bh4 Qe5+ 22. Kf1 (22. Qe2?? Qxe2+ 23. Kxe2 Nd4+) Nd4 (22 ... Qxc5?! 23. Qxe6+) with a sharp position. For the game continuation (21. Rh4!? Qe5+ 22. Kf1 fxg3) Black's King escaped to the center.
Jun-15-06  LIFE Master AJ: I think this was annotated in the June 1996 "Chess Life" magazine. (GM R. Byrne's column ... 'The 65th Square.')
May-22-14  fmartelli: Why not 25... Qf5? Thanks!
May-22-14  NeoIndian: 26.Qxf5 exf5 27.Bc4+ Kf6(only move) 28.Re6+! Kf7 29.Re1+ and White forces a perpetual. Maybe Ivanchuk was looking for a win in the other line.
Apr-09-16  DWINS: Ivanchuk refused to accept a $300 prize for this game selected by the spectators for "the player of the round". He contended that his performance wasn't worthy, but Robert Byrne suggested that he was upset with the spectators for awarding the round 3 prize to a hometown player rather than to him for his marvelous queen sacrifice conception: Ivanchuk vs Shirov, 1996
