Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-06-06  Gypsy: <"How did the game end?" -- the arbiter asked Yusupov.

"It was drawn."

"But I heard him resign!"

"That is not important. I offered a draw, and the position is in fact drawn" -- the grandmaster replied.

As the result, a pieceful outcome of this extremely tense fight was agreed, and Yusupov reached the Semi-Finals of the World Chapionship Candidates tournament for the third time in succession.

"Of course, I could have played on until my oponent's flag fell, but why spoil an interesting game by senseless moves in time-trouble?" -- Artur explained to me later. >

Mar-01-09  WhiteRook48: wait, did Ivanchuk resign?
Apr-13-09  Jim Bartle: Ivanchuk tried to resign, as he was about to flag, but Yusupov said he had already offered a draw, so a draw it was.
Feb-06-12  paavoh: What a story and what a fight!

Fusilli: If 35...Rxf4 , black can end up an entire queen up, momentarily, but the outcome would surely be a draw, and Ivanchuk was playing to win.

And 39.e7 pretty much secures the draw.

saffuna: Remember, this was a must-win game for Ivanchuk after he lost the extraordinary game Ivanchuk vs Yusupov, 1991. It was played at an odd semi-rapid time control in the playoff after the 8-game match was drawn.
