Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-05-08  hedgeh0g: Is 22...Kxg7 really so bad?
Feb-05-11  Whitehat1963: Yeah, I have the same question, exactly three years later. What's wrong with 22...Kxg7?
Feb-05-11  esbstrd: It looks like 22...Kxg7 allows 23. Nxd6 (not sure if it matters which knight) threatening 24. Nxf5+ followed by a fatal queen penetration. For example 22...Kxg7 23. Ncxd6 Bxb5 24. Nxf5+ And now black faces the grim choice of dropping his queen for insufficient compensation or getting mated.

(1) 24... Kh7 25. Qh5 and there's no good defense to Qxh6

(2) 24...Kh8 25. Qh5 and nothing is different

(3) 24...Kg6 25. Qg4+ Kf6 (25...Kh7 26. Qh5 transposes to line 1.) Qg7#

(4) 24...Kf6 25. Qa1+ Kg5 (25...Kg6 26. Qg7+ Kh5 27. g4#) 26. Qg7+ Kh5 27. g4#

Perhaps black has a better defense than 23... Bxb5 but Im sure what it is. Hope that answers your question.

Feb-05-11  esbstrd: Hmm on second look it seems 23...Rh8 may put up stiffer resistance. I'll have to work on that line.
