26. ?

after 30.g7+ whatever Black's move, White queens and wins the queen.

Sep-05-24  Allderdice83: The power of the advanced passed pawn. White gives up a rook and a knight, but gains back a queen and rook. 30 ... Ke8 31. g8=Q+ Qxg8 32. Qxg8+ Ke7 33. Qxa8. Maybe even better is 31. Re1+ first -- if 31 ... Be6, g8=Q# or even g8=R# (the bishop is pinned and blocks the queen). If 31 ... Kd8 32. g8=Q+ Kc7, simply 33. Qxa2 and White's up 2 queens for a rook and knight.

Glad to say I saw this one all the way to the resignation point and beyond.

  takebackok: Easy Thursday, all forced 26. Nf6+ gxf6 27. Rh8+ Kxh8 28. Qh1+ Kg8 29. Qh7+ Kf8 30. g7+ then up 2 queens gg.
Sep-05-24  mel gibson: Fairly easy today.

Stockfish 16.1 says mate in 19:

26. Nf6+

(26. Nf6+ (1.Nf6+ gxf6 2.Rh8+ Kxh8 3.Qh1+ Kg8 4.Qh7+ Kf8 5.g7+ Ke8 6.g8R+ Qxg8 7.Qxg8+ Ke7 8.Qg7+ Kd8 9.Bxf5 Rd3+ 10.Kxd3 Kc7 11.Rc1+ Kb6 12.Bxd7 Nc6 13.Qxf6 Rc8 14.Bxc8 a5 15.Qe6 Kb5 16.Bxb7 Kb6 17.Qxc6+ Ka7 18.Qa6+ Kb8 19.Qa8+) +M19/89 300)

White wins _ mate in 19.

scormus: Well, that was easy enough. I thought Tuesday was harder. Doesn't look like declining the N or R is any better for B
Sep-05-24  TheaN: Actually confused myself a bit and considered there to be no pawn on f6 after the first moves. Ironically, then it becomes harder as Black's king can escape there and White should consider options as Qd4+ and Qe5+.

Alas, all in the mind, and then it became clear the main line is as good as forced: <26.Nf6+ gxf6 (Kf8 27.Rh8+ Qg8 28.Rxg8#) 27.Rh8+ Kxh8 (Kg7 28.Qe7+ #2)>:

Probably what the puzzle moderator thought was the Thursday move, and with that I agree. Overall difficulty's still rather easy due to it all being forced. <28.Qh1+> backwards queen moves are horrible to spot, in this case it kind of makes sense as the clearance was purely to allow the queen to join the party. <28....Kg7/g8 29.Qh7+ Kf8 30.g7+> and now regardless of what Black does he loses the queen, though it matters what he does if White keeps his second: <30....Ke8 (Kf7?? 31.g8Q#; Ke7? 31.g8Q+ Kd6 32.Qxa2 +-) 31.g8Q+ Qxg8 32.Qxg8+ Ke7> and here I'd probably prefer <33.Qg7+ Kd6 34.bxc3 +-> but Re1+ and Qxa8 win by a landslide also.
