Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-24-05  Jack Rabbit: <Rook v. Two Connected Pawns> from <57 -- Rxg4+>

In this ending, the position of the Black King and Rook and the fact that White is attempting to push his rim Pawns causes White to run out of space.

In the final position, White is in a zugzwang. If <63 Kb5> then <63 -- Rxb6+> wins both Pawns. Had Black played the capture earlier, it would have been a blunder: e.g., <62 -- Rxb6 63 a8=Q+ Kxa8 64 Kxb6>. Chess is a game of time and space; a check is a useful and simple way to gain time.
