  fredthebear: This is a pseudo Hook Mate with a much different arrangement of pawns. Here the White knight is supported from behind by his own king instead of the normal pawn prop. Typically, the losing Black king would be limited by his own pawns on the dark squares d6 and e5, but here the White pawns do the job. The supporting knight is usually blockading a backward pawn in the chain (for example a knight on the 6th blocking a fianchetto structure where the mated king has replaced his missing bishop).

I wonder if Black thought he'd blundered allowing 39.f6. Maybe he intended ...Ng4+ and then noticed that White could simply take the knight. But it looks like he could have defended with 39....Rg2!: if 40.fxg7 Ne6 41.Rxh6 Rxg3.
