  tpstar: After 12. Re4, Tamburro gives 12 ... f5 13. Rh4 Kf7 14. Rxh7 Rxg7 15. Rxg7+ Kxg7 16. Qd2 or 16. h4 with 17. Ng5 as good for White, and 12 ... d3! 13. Ng5 dc 14. Qxc2 Qd3 15. Qxd3 cxd3 16. Nxe6 fxe6 17. Nc3 Rd8 18. Rd1 Rxg7 19. Re3 d2 20. Ne4 and White's better. I would suggest natural centralization with 12 ... Qd5 preventing Ng5 and hitting the Re4; 13. Qe2 (13. Nbd2? c3) Rad8 14. Nbd2 d3 with tempo, then ... Rxg7 and pressure on g2. Other ideas?

tpstar: 8. fg is a materialistic way to handle the Max Lange, which works very well in practice, although it clears the dark squares on f6 and e7 for Black to defend while half-opening the g file. The key trick is 8 ... Rg8 9. Re1+ Be6 10. Bg5 Be7 11. Bxe7 Kxe7! and Black's King is safe.

Please ignore the previous suggestion of 12. Re4 Qd5?! because White plays 13. Nc3 kicking the Queen. Some things you never notice until you play the game. =)

Which is why Black is best to avoid the whole line and play 5...Nxe4 with an equal game and few prospects of a White win.
