kenilworthian: In a game from a few years later, Rudolf Smirka - Carlos Torre, New York 1925, White missed the key move 9.Ng3! The Knight retreat is hard for humans to see, though, because it does not capture anything and the Knight actually retreats.

I have annotated the Smirka - Torre game online: http://www.kenilworthchessclub.org/...

Jul-17-20  zydeco: Yates' nightmare tournament meets Euwe's nightmare tournament. It looks like black comes out of the opening a clear pawn ahead but the dark-squared bishop is really useless; the computer evaluation gives white the edge throughout. Probably best is 13....Qxf5 14.Nxf5 Bf8 followed by 15.....0-0-0.

Count the pieces.

Mar-10-22  Brenin: Oh, dear! A GOTD which is effectively over after 9 moves, and a pun which is completely beyond me. Is Supermax a prison, a cinema, or what?

FSR: <Brenin> Supermax is indeed a type of prison, intended for the most dangerous violent criminals.

Phony Benoni: It looks like the original phrase was:

<Supermax: Where They keep the Worst of the Worst>

"Dewhirst" is not a bad substitute. And I suppose it does describe the game pretty well.

Mar-10-22  Z truth 000000001: From do better to dewhirst, <CG> is furst.

  Teyss: SuperMiss: do Worse.
The pun makes sense when you know Euwe and Yates finished penultimate and last of the tournament respectively. Fits the game too.

< Euwe - Yates, The Hague 1921. I'm surprised that Torre did not know this game or the trap.>

Maybe he only knew the games of weak players like W Pollock vs C D Locock, 1883, Paulsen vs Blackburne, 1887, G Oskam vs P Johner, 1906 and E F Schrader vs C W Blake, 1909.
