louispaulsen88888888: I would think 37 Kt to K5 check would be better. The paladin arrives at a fine square with tempo.

fredthebear: <37.Ne5> is not only legal, but it's check! Looks like the best move.

pbR missed that one. Google was of no help.

Check It Out: Perhaps <ftb> is not familiar with descriptive notation? 37.Kt to K5 check is legal.

perfidious: The position after 37.Ne5 would be of interest: White has plenty of play for the pawn, but where does the knight go from that eternal square, and how is the pressure on Burn's game increased? This is far from clear to me.
May-09-23  stone free or die: <perf> - what defines best?

The computer line gives White an extra pawn edge after 37.Ne5 vs 37.Nf4 (about 1.5 vs 0.5), but if you look at the play (SF 15 at ~37-ply) there's an awful lot of shuffling back and forth of the pieces on both sides.

There's no clear win from what I can tell.

(The obvious disadvantage Black has of having all his pawns on the same color as the bishop might be mentioned, despite being a pawn up. And the bishop not covering the e-pawn's promotion square gets a nod too).

perfidious: <zed>, when I was analysing, my view was that Steinitz was doing all the running, and that Black's position needed one more push, but in the hypothesis, how is that pretty-looking knight at e5 going to aid the cause? Bad though Burn's bishop is, its role on defence is important, and neither could I find a clearcut way through.
May-09-23  stone free or die: First - I quoted the wrong eval just above, 1.5 is wrong (my bad).

Here's the SF line:

<( [Stockfish 15] 37:+1.14 37.Ne5+ Ke6 38.Rc5 Bc6 39.b3 a6 40.a4 Qe7 41.Qg3 Qd6 42.Qf4 Re8 43.Qh4 Rf8 44.Qg3 Bd7 45.Qf4 Re8 46.Qg5 Rf8 47.Rc2 Bc6 48.Kh2 Qc7 49.Rc5 Qe7 50.Qg3 Qd6 51.Qf4 Be8 52.Kh3 Bc6 53.Kg3 Rc8 )>

The Black bishop is part of the stone wall defense (like <perf mentioned, a good defender). White has the better position, but can't convert.

louispaulsen88888888: Thank you for the analysis. It looks as though a draw would still have been the likely result after Ne5+.
May-10-23  stone free or die: <lp8x8> - fwiw I do wonder how AlphaZero would play it out.

louispaulsen88888888: Yeah, Alphazero vs Stockfish from that position. 255 move draw!
May-13-23  stone free or die: Ha! (Likely right, but what else is A0 up to these days?)
