According to Smyslov, 40..Kc7 would have saved a draw.

Oct-01-07  whiteshark: <waddayaplay>: I guess you read Smyslov's <Secrets of rook endgames>, didn't you ?

Botvinnik also analyzes 40. … Kc7 as drawing.

The following analysis appears in “Botvinnik-Smyslov: Three World Championship Matches: 1954, 1957, 1958”, by Mikhail Botvinnik, New in Chess ©2009, at page 209: <40...Kc7> 41.Rxa6 Rf8 42.Rxg6 (or 42.Kf3 g5 43.Rg6 Rb8=) 42...f3 43.Rg1 Rb8! 44.Rf1 Rxb3 45.Rxf3 Rb1! (but not 45...Rb4 46.Kd5 Ra4 47.Rf7+ Kb8 48.Kc5! ) 46.Kd5 Kb7 “obtaining a well-known drawn ending”.

BTW, although this blunder was the last move before the time control, Botvinnik still had 2-3 minutes left on his clock, per his comment in “Botvinnik-Smyslov: Three World Championship Matches: 1954, 1957, 1958”, by Mikhail Botvinnik, New in Chess ©2009, at page 209.

This game was played after a three day postponement due to <Botvinnik> coming down with gastrointestinal influenza whilst playing the adjourned position from game 4.

Another stupid loss. In my defense I could hardly concentrate owing to the rustling in the audience as the Armenians unfurled their stupid wax mats.

I have ordered the committee to take action on this.

Let's go!>

Oct-08-19  King.Arthur.Brazil: It is amazing how both players are not working well in this match. You see some Smyslov without attitude. Firstly, he is in the seventh-rank, and instead of bring his KS rook in to play, he takes the one at 7th back to the 4th rank, then double the rook, while black blockades his return. Then double the rook in the 8th rank to force a change the rooks, as he was winning, he is 3 point back? Fear of another defeat? He has strong pawn structure in the QS, thereforehe must advance it, make an advanced passed pawn, no advance the QRP which is the blocked one? Today, my impression is that, Smyslov fear to win and the Comunist Party would make something bad with him. This strange "rematch" was somehow absurd to me. I guess that Botwinnink would have to win the candidates first, before being a challenger to the new champion Smyslov of the 1957. I don't agree with this "FIDE rules", which were not observed after. In the same thesis, B. Spassky would have a rematch against J.R. Fisher, and other cases, which I don't remember now. It seems that Smyslov would have to lose, anyway. He is playing worst than ever.

keypusher: <King.Arthur.Brazil> I'm not sure what you're saying, but I suspect I disagree with every word.

People will be able to follow your train of thought better if you use move numbers and symbols (like 21.Rd4 instead of <Firstly, he is in the seventh-rank, and instead of bring his KS rook in to play, he takes the one at 7th back to the 4th rank, then double the rook, while black blockades his return.>).

I can't believe Botvinnik lost from here.
