Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-03-10  PizzatheHut: I have a couple of questions if anyone cares to answer them.

1) What was the thinking behind 15...Be4?

2) Why did Botvinnik play 16. Bh3? I assumed it was to be able to play Nd2 without having to trade bishops but Botvinnik voluntarily plays 18. Bg2 for a bishop trade shortly thereafter.

Jul-03-10  Calli: I think Be4 is to exchange the B before White plays e4. He trying to force Nd2 and then Bxg2. Botvinnik tries to avoid the B exch with Bh3. He has some threats against the Q at c8 with d5 etc. However, he soon realizes that after Qa6 which pins the c4 pawn, Black has Bxd5 against d5. So he exchanges the B.

Botvinnik misses the easy win 32.f4 after which Black might as well resign.

Dec-27-15  zydeco: <Calli> 32.f4 Nxe4 33.fxg5 Nxg5 seems messy. Black has a lot of play.
