  Sneaky: 64. g5!

According to Smyslov: "Rd7+ leads nowhere: 64. Rd7+ Kf8 65. e7+ Ke8! 66. Rb7 Ra5+ 67. Kg6 Rg5+, and draws. ... There seem to be no other ways of improving White's position."

Syslov then goes on to explain that Black could have still drawn with the amazing defensive play 64. ...Ra7! instead of the losing hxg5?

  wwall: 60...Rb2 61.Kg6 Kf8 62.Ra8+ Ke7 63.Kxg7 wins.

61...Kh7 62.e5

After 65.fxe5, White threatens 66.Rd7+ Rxd7 67.e6+ Ke7 68.exd7 Kxd7 69.Kg6, winning.

Dec-31-06  AdrianP: <Sneaky>

White is still winning after 64. ...Ra7! 65 Re5!

64... Ra7 65. Re5!

(a) 65. Rd7+? Rxd7 66. exd7 Kxd7 67. Kg6 hxg5= 68. Kxg7 (68. Kxg5 Ke7 69. Kg6 Kf8) 68... g4)

(b) 65. gxh6? gxh6 66. Rb5 Rc7 67. Rb6 Rc5+ 68. Kg6 Re5 69. Kxh6 Kf6 70. Ra6 Rf5=

65. ...hxg5 66. Kxg5 Kd6 67. Kf5 Ke7 68 Kg6 Ra1 69 Kxg7 Rg1+ 70 Kh6 Rg2 71 Rg5!

Sneaky: <Adrian> I am confused at what I quoted from Smyslov as well as your answer. What is 64...Ra7? In what variation? The rook is already on a7 how does he move it there twice? And what is "Rd7+ leads nowhere" supposed to mean, that move just gives up the rook. And what the heck is e7+ check, there is no pawn anywhere near e7! I'm soooo confused!!

I think I might have botched up some move numbers here or something... or am I just being dense.

Dec-31-06  euripides: Happy New Year, all !

The final position in the game shown here looks drawn by 72...Re4, but the score may be wrong. According to Levenfish and Smyslov Najdorf resigned after 72.e7 Ra8 - I guess Black has no defence against Rd6-d8.

<Adrian>'s analysis corresponds with a variation in Levenfsh and Smlyslov after 67.g5 Ra7.

I wonder if Black would be better to keep the bishops on rather than play 42..Bb5.

Dec-31-06  euripides: In the position in the score - which I don't think happened - one amusing line, if White still tries to win, is 72...Re4 73.Kf5 Re1 74.Kxg4 Kg7 75.Kf5 Rf1+ 76.Ke5 Rxf6 77.e7 Rf1 78 e8=Q Re1+ and Black wins.
Jan-01-07  AdrianP: <Sneaky> We're both being dense - both your last sentence and my entire variation should refer to 67 ...Ra7.

The variation I posted is from Mueller, where he only gives a game fragment, not the correct move numbers - hence confusion.

I think Euripides is right that the game score here is wrong - it should finish 72 e7 Ra8 73 Rf6 (as given by Mueller, also Megabase) - with the idea being Rd6 and Rd8.

Dec-30-08  whiteshark: <55...Rb5> would have prevented white's ♔ from passing the river.

It seems that chessgames.com fixed this problem after it was reported. But now, what if 73...Re8? I guess White's rook goes back: 74.Rf7 and if 74...Ra8 then 75.Rg7+ Kh8 76.Kf7 h5 77.Rg5.

Nov-26-09  Lt.Surena: 13... Na6? Black gives up a pawn for free and all momentum/advantage shifts to white

Actually if 73....Re8 White simply continues with 74.Rd6 and mate follows in a few moves whatever Black does.

Oh, of course! Elegant final stroke.

Jun-18-15  Mating Net: When I first played over this game several years ago and 400 rating points ago, I thought White would play 65.Rxe5 to keep the pawns connected.

Hard to push a passed pawn if you don't have one, (:
