Mar-19-08  Knight13: 30. Kf3 Ne5+ 0-1.
Sep-10-13  zydeco: I'm really surprised by 19....Nc6. It seems like black should exploit white's lagging development and weak f3 square with 19....Nd5 or 19....g5!?

22....Ne3 is a cool move, but Smyslov finds a neat drawing idea by weakening black's back rank.

Sep-10-13  Nerwal: <I'm really surprised by 19....Nc6. It seems like black should exploit white's lagging development and weak f3 square with 19....Nd5 or 19....g5!? >

Botvinnik's understanding was that 19... ♘c6 was forced because he should not allow the trade ♗xe5. White's DS ♗ is actually a liability after ♘d5, it does not have any good square.

  perfidious: <Knight13: 30. Kf3 Ne5+ 0-1.>

A comment displaying great profundity and insight.

Sep-11-13  zydeco: <Nerwal> Except that Botvinnik's line takes the knight out of action and lets the bishop get to a good square, g5, after Qg4! Black had the initiative on move 19 and let it slip.

plang: Normally 8 Nbd2 is played; 8 e5 was new and seems to make it easier for Black to attack White's center. 15 Bxe6+..Kh8 16 dxe..Nc7 17 Bg4..d4 18 Bd2..Nxe5 would have favored Black. Although White played a mediocre opening his 20 Qg4 and 22 Nd2 (which he spent a half hour on) gave him enough play to ear a draw.
Mar-06-23  Ninas Husband: The first draw in three weeks!
