Let's go! Nevertheless rather shameful."

plang: Down a point after losing the previous game Bronstein decided to play this game very conservatively even though he had a promising middlegame to play for more. 8 cxd was a new move; Botvinnik playing White has had success with 8 e3 which is now the most popular move. Botvinnik thought that 17 e4 would have been a promising continuation and if 17..d4 then h3 and f4 with a strong outpost on c4. Bronstein thought, after the game, that 21 Nd3..f4 22 bxc..dxc 23 Bxb7..c3 24 Bg2..c2 25 Ba2..cxd(Q) 26 Rxd1 would have given White excellent compensation. 43 Nc6+..Kd6 44 Nxa5..Kc7 would have cost White his knight.
