Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-21-06  Resignation Trap: April 10, 1951

Before the game, Botvinnik repeated comments in his journal that he used earlier:

1) Remember the assessment, fight for an enduring initiative, harassing moves, technique.

2) Work and don't miscalculate.

3) Complete composure - <time>!!

Make a move when everything is clear! Let's go!"

Sep-21-06  Resignation Trap: Botvinnik's shortest post-game assessment so far:

"It all turned out as was needed - because he helped!"

Mar-23-08  Knight13: 11. fxe4 e5 and black's better, in my opinion.
May-07-09  Fanques Fair: Hello, don´t you think there´s a good number of dutch games in this match ? I like to play it myself, and it got black good results in this match... I wonder why it almost disappeared from grandmaster play nowadays. It has the interesting idea of a couterattack by black in the kingside, although it can lead sometimes to dubious positions. One of the strategic themes for black is to play e5, which permits the c8 bishop to start playing... I prefer the Classical, Rubinstein and Leningrad variations rather than the stonewall... the fact is that it must be not so bad as it was played by both Botvinnik and Bronstein at the match, with at least reasonable results for Black !

plang: 3 e3 is rarely played anymore; a kingside fianchetto against the Dutch is almost automatic nowadays. 5 Nh3?! was new and has never been repeated; the main idea behind the move appears to be an attempt at eccentricity. Bronstein was critical of 9 f3?! recommending 9 Nf4 instead; after 9 Nf4..g5 10 Nh3..h6 11 f4..g4 12 Nf2 White would at least have a target to attack. Bronstein could have and probably should have maintained material euality with 11 fxe..e5 12 Bxc4+..Kh8 though Black would have a positional advantage here. After Bronstein's 13 f4? both of his bishops were restricted; 13 Bf4 would have been preferable. 23 g5..b4 24 Qe3..Bxf3 25 Qxf3..Nd5 would not have helped White. Neither would 24 Rxe6..Nxg4 25 Rg6..Qf7.

Just a poor game by Bronstein.

Apr-04-20  joddon: it wasn't over but anyhow, Bronstein tries to trade everything, doesn't look for a single tactic in the whole game....u can play 1200 level players and have better games on the net than this game......one of those nights I think Bronstein would be under pressure and couldn't sleep!!!! it happens to the best of us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
