  fredthebear: In the final position, Black isn't going anywhere. The Black queen is tied to the defense of the pinned Rg7. White will double his rooks on the e-file, exchange on e8 which will pin and deflect the Black queen from her defensive responsibilities, allowing QxRg7#. So, to avoid checkmate, Black moves Kg8 to release the absolute pin. This causes White to initiate two pieces of each color being exchanged on g7 and White winds up a rook ahead.
