wwall: This game was played on October 8. Both players would know the date because October 8 was the birthday of both Bisguier and Toran.

After 25...Rxg3, if 26.Nxf5, then 26...Rxg2+ 27.Kh1 Rxf2+ wins for Black.

Oct-08-09  KokeFischer: I played against Bisguier in NYO-1994. He won quite easily. Great experience to play with such legendary GM.

Happy birthday to both masters!

May-27-10  wordfunph: sidelights of this Olympiad game..

1958 Munich Chess Olympiad: In Spain versus USA match, Toran won against Bisguier on the third board. As soon as the American master resigned Toran said with a smile: "I am so happy, it's a nice present for my birthday!". "It's all right" said his opponent politely - "today happens to be my birthday too"...

Feb-02-13  jerseybob: Bisguier loves to play Qe2 gainst the Lopez, even against the annoying Berlin defense he plays so often as black. White's troubles here stem from 10.Bxc6 and it's flukey follow-up 11.d5!? 10.Bd3 seems better(10.Ba4?,Nxd4), and if 10..Nb4 11.Bb1 followed by a3.

FSR: Bisguier later became a big fan of the Berlin Defense himself. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... 4.Qe2 is innocuous, but Karpov later played it against Bisguier. Bisguier escaped with a draw in 84 moves! Karpov vs A Bisguier, 1970.

perfidious: In the mid 1980s, I watched Ronald L Henry book a fairly easy draw vs Bisguier, but could not bring myself to enter the Berlin Wall in either encounter with White. Stuck to 1.d4 and lost anyway.

In his early days, Art was far more likely to explore theoretical byways with either colour than enter something like the Berlin as Black.

White might not have liked <10.Bd3 Nb4 11.Bb1 Bb5 12.Nc4 d5 13.exd5 Qxd5>

(Intending 14.Qxe7 Qxc4 15.Rd1 Rfe8 16.Qc5 Qe2, winning material.) <14.b3 Rfe8>, when Black seems to have the initiative.
