Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-18-13  nescio: A remarkable moment after 27.Ne6

click for larger view

At first sight 27.Ne6 looks like a natural positional move but there is snag. 27...Nxc4 28.Bxc4 Bxc4 29.Qxc4 Qb2! with the winning double threat 30...Qxf2+ and Nxe3+.

But White could evade the problems and get an advantage after all with (27...Nxc4) 28.Bxg4! fxg4 (28...Qd5 29.Qa4!) 29.Qxe4 Ne5 30.Nxc5! etc.

Both players must have seen that and Balashov retreated with 27...Nf6. Well done.
