Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-05-09  pacorrum: What kind of opening is this??
Feb-05-09  Jim Bartle: Pretty strange. But it was played in an Interzonal and included in an Informant.

Maybe it was a late round game and Tal had already qualified and Alburt was eliminated.

Feb-06-09  nescio: This game was played in the 5th round and Tal had had two wins in round 3 and 4, which meant he was on +2. He probably felt he was on schedule for qualifying. In the end he didn't qualify for the candidate matches, ending 4th, 1/2 point behind the three winners.

As for Black's second move, Alburt probably tried to steer the position into a gambit structure with which he was very familiar, as in the game Schussler vs Alburt, 1987
