Jul-19-09  Coolin: love the pun
Jul-19-09  squlpt: Pretty good chess for a lush ;)
Jul-19-09  dumbgai: Today's pun is a tad mean to Alekhine, isn't it?
Jul-19-09  redmaninaustin: mean if he weren't a drunk bigot... he may have been a great chess player but the pun is appropriate

eternaloptimist: The pun is very appropriate, but alcoholism is a very sad thing.
Jul-19-09  Eduardo Leon: Nice placement of the comma!

whiteshark: Can't be that anonymous if you've already heard about it.
Jul-19-09  fgh: Hahaha, I really like this pun :-)
Premium Chessgames Member Today's pun was the idea of User: Thrajin but we chose a different game than the one that he suggested.
Jul-19-09  sfm: This pun is excellent. This must be why CG brings it, though they should definitely not. Alekhine's life can be read about on his page here and alcoholism may come for a reason. That he still emerged as the best player in the world calls for respect - not cheap shots in public headlines.
Jul-19-09  newzild: I'm not a big fan of puns, because they sometimes seem to determine the game of the day for no other valid reason.

However, this one genuinely made me smile.

Jul-19-09  NewLine: This pun made me laugh! And I don't see any offense against the great A.A(...) in this context of good spirit.

randomsac: Good pun. I just love how Alekhine moves in the heavy artillery against black's weak kingside.

hedgeh0g: Nice pun and fun game to boot!
Jul-19-09  Thrajin: Glad it finally made the cut. :-)
Jul-19-09  TheTamale: I really do NOT like the pun. No need for character assassination. Odd, too, because chess players the same bunch who will excuse anti-semitism of the worst order simply because the lunatic spouting it was a great player.
Jul-19-09  Thrajin: <TheTamale>, the intent of my pun was not to defame anyone's character. In fact, the original game associated with this pun was a Mikhail Tal game, and I regard him as not only one of the greatest chess players ever, but also one of the kindest and most accessible.
Jul-19-09  Samagonka: 23? Would make a good Monday or Tuesday puzzle. I don't get the gag behind the pun though, was Alekhine an alcoholic?

WannaBe: Alekhine puts the Ale in ale!!

  tamar: Good pun.

He was more than kin to ale and less than kind.

Jul-19-09  Gambit All: The pun's tasteless. Also at this time Alekhine didn't have a drinking problem.
Jul-19-09  TheChessGuy: <Gambit All> You're right. His drinking problem didn't emerge until the early 1930's. He probably took it up out of boredom; winning top class events like Bled 1931 by more than five points can do that to people.
