plang: In this super-sharp line 11..Nxd4 was new; 11..Qc7 and 11..Nxe5 had been played previously. Shirov thought that the best defense was 13..Qd7 with some compensation for the pawn; after 13..Nc6?! 14 Bg5! Black was worse. 14..Qa5+?! led to an inferior endgame; 14..Qb6 was an alternative. The simple 16 0-0-0 would have maintained White's advantage. 16 f4?! gave Black an opportunity for counterplay which, fortunately for Shirov, he missed. Instead of Yermolinsky's 16..Rc8?! Lukacs provided the following analysis: 16..Bxc2 17 Bb5+..Nc6 18 Rc1..Bb4+ 19 Ke2..Be4 20 Rhd1..0-0 21 Bxc6 with a smaller White edge than in the game. After 21..Rc2+ (21..Rc4 was better) and 22..Rg2 giving up the c-file Black's position collapsed. Against 23..Kd7 Shirov planned 24 a3..Rxg4 25 axb..Rxh5 26 b5! with a winning breakthrough.
