Kibitzer's Corner
May-22-06  positionalbrilliancy: Does this not transpose into a Grunfeld Defense...?
Premium Chessgames Member
plang: Opening is mis-characterized; after 7..Bg7 game has transposed to the classical Exchange Gruenfeld (D85). The gambit 8 Rb1 was very popular during this time period; Kramnik instead chose a sideline 8 Bb5+. Kramnik was critical of 15..c5?! recommending 15..e5 16 Rxc6..Qe8 17 Rdc1..Bxe3 18 Qxe3 with a small White edge. 19..Rd8 was played in Ftacnik-Ivanchuk Erevan Olympiad 1996; 19..Rc8 was new. Though Ivanchuk was able to draw it is surprising that Shirov chose this line (unless he was unfamiliar with the theory of this rare sideline!?). 23..Rxf2+ 24 Ke1..Be3 25 Qxe7..Rxg2 26 e5 would have been bad for Black. Kramnik dentified 24..e6? as a critical error citing 24..h5 as the only defense though White would still have held a clear edge in this line.
