keypusher: This was the first of three mighty battles between Bogoljubov and Rubinstein in this variation. They all ended in draws.

Rubinstein opened the h-file, which shouldn't have worked given his cramped, overcrowded kingside.

Here 27.Kg2! was very strong (Kg2 also would have been strong on move 23).

If 27....Rf7 as in the game (27....fxh4?? 28.Qg4+ Kf7 29.Qh5+ and Black gets mated), then 28.Ng6 and if 28....Nxg6 29.fxg6 Rg7 30.Rh1 White is winning (30....Rxg6 31.Qh5). But if 28....Rh7 29.Nxf4! and Black can't take the knight, which threatens to land on e6.

Bogoljubov played 27.Bxf4, which looks very strong, but after 28....Rf7! 29.Bh2 Rh7 Black was OK. 29.Kg2?! is a move too late, since Black's rook has the tempo it needs to reach the h-file: 29....Rh7 30.Ng6? Nxg6 31.fxg6 Bh3+! 32.Kf2 Rh6 and Black is winning.

In the game if, instead of 30.Ne3, 30.Nf4 Ne5 31.Ne6 Bxe6 32.fxe6 Kg7

White won't be able to break down the dark-square blockade.

Retireborn: <keypusher> Thanks for that. Bogo's beautiful attack with 24.f4! and 25.Nef5! deserved a better fate.

In my database Keres and Stein later won games with 15.c4, but it's evidently considered harmless these days.

perfidious: Pity that Bogo's single error during the attack cost him a half-point as his opponent coolly defended, but that is life at the highest levels.

keypusher: <retireborn> and <perfidious> Thanks. I should point out a numbering error in my earlier post. After 27.Bxf4, I should have written <27….Rf7! 28.Bh2 Rh7 Black was OK. 28.Kg2?! is a move too late, since Black’s rook has the tempo it needs to reach the h-file: 28….Rh7 29.Ng6? Nxg6 30.fxg6 Bh3+! 31.Kf2 Rh6 and Black is winning.>

I should also point out that SF <likes> …h5, but sooner and with the idea of offering a pawn for open lines. After 17.g4:

17….h5!? and if 18.gxh5 g6! and if 19.hxg6 fxg6 20.Kg2 Bf6 followed by …Qh7 and …Ng7 and the engine thinks Black has full compensation. But if 18.Nf1 hxg4 19.hxg4 Bxg4 20.Kg2 followed by Ng3 and Rh1, it thinks White is better. So apparently the moral for both sides is, give up a pawn and you’ll be OK, but winning a pawn will just cause you trouble.
