we can learn one way of defense with pawn in a2: White can allow Black to get pawn to a3, and then enter into pawn endgame. Here

54.Rd1! is the only move.
54.Rd2 loses to 54...Ra1: 55. Kd3 Kb5 56. Re2 c4+! 57. bxc4+ Ka4 58. c5 Rxa2!, and White has the sad choice between R+P vs Q after 59.Rxa2 b3, or Q vs Q+P after 59.c6 Rxe2 60.Kxe2 a2, both of these are tablebase wins for Black.
But 50. bxa4 was drawing as well.
