Oct-01-17 | | Vermit: That's a very nice final combination - would make a good Thursday/Friday puzzle. |
|
Oct-14-22 | | mayankk06: I saw the main themes in this puzzle.
1) White's monster pair of Bishops which can be unleashed by a Rook sac at either e5 or f6 2) White's supercharged Rook-Queen-Rook Battery on the f file which can be unleashed by a Bishop sac at e5. 3) Black's f8 Rook is defended twice by e6 Knight and e8 Rook. If the e6 Knight can be eliminated, then the f8 Rook can be taken after clearance of the f file. 4) The h5 pawn restricts Black King's mobility by taking away the g6 flight square. This suggests that a mating combination may work. 5) The e3 Knight is waiting in the wings to join the attack via either Nf5 or Ng4-Nf6 manoeuvre. The tricky bit however was to choose the right sac and the right order of moves. I unfortunately erred here by trying to make Bxe5 work instead of Rxe5. |
|
Oct-14-22 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: I went with the same line that the engine prefers, namely 29 Bxe5 fxe5
30 Bxe6
What got me there is:
-- Saccing at f6 and following up with Bxe5 allows ... Nf4 as an interposition. -- An immediate Bxe6 would allow Black to batten down the hatches with the obvious ... Rxe6. |
|
Oct-14-22 | | Brenin: My choice was 29 Bxe5, which seems to work just as well as Chigorin's 29 Rxe5, e.g. 29 ... fxe5 30 Bxe6 Bxe6 31 Rxf8, or 29 ... Nf4 30 Bxf4 gxf4 31 Rxf4 followed by Bxg8 and Rxf6. |
|

29. Bxe5 which is still winning.

 | | al wazir: I went for 29. Bxe5, threatening the ♙ on f6. If 29...fxe5, then 30. Rf7+ Rxf7 31. Qxf7+ Kh8 32. Qxe8, and now white is up the ♙ and an exchange. The only way I see for black to avoid losing another piece is to play 32...Qd7 , allowing the ♕ swap. That ought to be enough to win.
I see that the usual suspects have already posted this line. I don't feel bad about that. It means I'm in good company. |
|
Oct-14-22 | | Refused: Black's position looks suspect. That bunch of disorganized pieces clustered around the black king...
White very much wants to play something along the line of Rxf6, Be5 and Ng4 crash through. The problem is, that's too slow and black can clog the f-file with Nf4, which takes the fun out of that idea. 29.Rxf6 Nxf6 30.Bxe5 Nf4-+ was my first try. That Bishop on c8 guards the g4 square, which is sorta unfortunate. So white is a tempo short this way. Thus. 30.Rxe5! fxe5 31.Bxe5+ (that check is vital, as black is now not in time for Nf4)
31...Nf6 32.Ng4 Nf4 33.Nxf6 +-
Black doesn't have to capture on e5 obviously. But then his position just falls apart, as that rook will pick up another pawn on a5 next, f5 is an excellent out post for the white Knight, overall this is just sad and resignable |

Oct-14-22 | | raymondhow: Like others, I went with 29. Bxe5 so I'd say that's a fairly easy Friday. |

Oct-14-22 | | mel gibson: error above.

Oct-14-22 | | jrredfield: Like others have said, it was a tossup between 29 Rxe5 and 29 Bxe5. I see Rxe5 as being stronger since the temptation to take it with the f-pawn was too great for Black to resist. That opened that all-important f-file for White to close in. According to Komodo Dragon, these are the 3 best moves (depth 34, not showing full calculations): +7.70 29.♖xe5 c5 30.♘f5+ ♔h8 31.♘d6 ♕d7 32.♘xe8 ♕xe8 33.♗xe6 ♗xe6 +6.53 29.♗xe5 ♔h8 30.♘g4 fxe5 31.♗xe6 ♖xf5 32.♗xf5 ♗xf5 33.♕xf5 ♕xf5 +3.71 29.♗xe6 ♗xe6 30.♗xe5 ♗xf5 31.♘xf5+ ♔h8 32.♗d6 ♖f7 33.♕b6 ♖d7 |

Oct-14-22 | | agb2002: White has the bishop pair for a bishop and a knight. Black would like to play Nf4.
White's heavy pieces x-ray f7. This suggests 29.Bxe5: A) 29... fxe5 30.Rf7+ Kh8 (30... Rxf7 31.Qxf7+ Kh8 32.Qxe8 wins decisive material) 31.Rxh7+ wins decisive material. B) 29... Rf7 30.Bxf6+ Nxf6 (30... Kf8 31.Bg7+ wins decisive material) 31.Rxf6 Rxf6 (31... Rfe7 32.Rf7+) 32.Qxf6+ Kg8 33.Nf5, followed by Nxh6+, wins. C) 29... Kh8 30.Bxf6+ Nxf6 31.Rxf6 wins two pawns at least. |

Oct-14-22 | | saturn2: I took 29. Bxe5 fxe5 30.Bxe6 this should win |

Oct-14-22 | | eblunt: < saturn2: I took 29. Bxe5 fxe5 30.Bxe6 this should win > I went for this as well. Black cant retake on ♗e6 as the ♖f8 goes. I count that as solved, it's a clearly winning move |

Oct-14-22 | | TheaN: I played Chigorin's variation, but did decide to take the piece back instantly, which is also +10. The line I'm referring to is <29.Rxe5 fxe5 30.Bxe5+ Nf6 31.Bxf6+ Kg8> and White's already dominating anyway, but <32.Ng4 +-> is quite the nail in the coffin. Not a very tough Friday indeed, but neat finish nonetheless. <jrredfield: I see Rxe5 as being stronger since the temptation to take it with the f-pawn was too great for Black to resist.> Fair point, but what's the alternative? Black doesn't really have the piece placement to defend against an onslaught on (or rather, via) the queen side. White threatens 30.Rxa5, and 29....c5 30.Bxe6 Bxe6 31.Rxc5 +-. Might not be best, but just to prove a point :> |

Oct-14-22 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: I saw this game years before, so I already expected 29. ♖xe5. I don't know if I saw it here or in old books (maybe Pachmann) or in Chessmaster game. Black fought hard but Chigorin explored the position like few. |

When there's more than 1 good choice it adds another layer to the puzzle. We have to guess which one the winner picked, which suits his style. |
