plang: 10..e5 was a new move that has been repeated several times but it has never replaced10..Nc6 as the main line. Keres thought that 14 Nd4 might have been a better way of maintaining tension in the position. 15 Nb5..Nf3+ 16 gxf..Bd7 17 Nxc7..Qe5 would have favored Black. 23..Qb5 24 Rce1..Bxb2? 25 Re7 would have been powerful for White. 30..d5 would have led to equality; Smyslov's 30..Qxa2?! led to difficulties for Black. 33..Ke8? further complicated Black's defense; better was 33..h6 34 Qh7+..Ke8 35 Qxg6+..Qf7 with an equal endgame. After 35 Qh4 the position was equal again; 35 Qh8 would have been the last chance to maintain some pressure.
