- Bobby Fischer vs Filipino Masters in 1967
Manila Electric Company sponsored "Beat Bobby Fischer Series" which was held during the month of April, 1967. Fischer playing the 10 best Philippine chess players at that time. Only then future GM Rosendo Balinas, Jr. gave Fischer the toughest fight and was able to draw his game with the then future World Champion.

Eugene Torre became Asia's first grandmaster when he earned his final GM norm in the 1974 Nice Chess Olympiad where he anchored the Philippine Team to the Final round and 11th place finish, the highest placing ever attained by the Philippines under the round-robin format. He also won the bronze medal on Board 1 of which the gold was garnered by then future World Champion Anatoly Karpov. Here are some of the selected games of the historic moment.
