Legall's (Unpin) Checkmate Kingside & Queenside
Compiled by fredthebear
--*--

Fredthebear spells Legall's Mate the traditional way with a total of three ls.

Fredthebear has read that Legall's Mate was originally spelled with two "ll"s (or double lls) on the back end for many years. Today, it is more often seen spelled with just one "l" on the back end, perhaps because a computer spell checker prefers one "l" and places a red underline under the longer (but seemingly correct) traditional spelling.

Who would change the speling of Bill Wall to Bil Wal?

Legall's Mate is a kingside checkmate. It features a king's knight unpin by leaping into the center, allowing the opposing bishop to capture the unmoved queen on her back rank. The queen drops off, but the newly advanced knight supports an attack by the checking bishop upon the weak f2/f7 square. A third minor piece often delivers the final check and mate.

Technically speaking, there is no Legall's Mate on the Queenside. However, there are numerous examples of Unpins of a similar nature that sacrifice the sitting queen that lead to checkmate or material advantage. The concept of the opponent's greed and ignorance of the next reply after capturing the queen is much the same on either side of the board; both patterns are well worth knowing.

Other Bishop and Knight checkmates are placed below the Legall's Mates sections. In these examples, neither minor piece captures w/check (usually); the Bishop is on an open diagonal and the Knight is flanked or more advanced instead of in the center.
