BOTVINNIK OR JUNGE VARIATION ?
Compiled by Breyannis Nektarios
--*--

Klaus Junge was perhaps a Nazi, but can we really judge a man of his age? (He died 21 years old in 1945). Anyway, he was a very talented master, who once beat the great Alekhine, and, if he had survived, would most probably evolve to become a top Grandmaster (the title was officially introduced in 1950). The "Botvinnik variation" was played by him 6 times before Botvinnik himself tried it for the first time in his game with Zhivcov in the Moscow Ch in 1943-44. Botvinnik had tried it once before in a (secret?) training game with Ragozin in 1941, but I don't think Junge was ever aware of this! Of course, there were also other games around that time (most notably Szabo-Euwe, Hastings 1938-39). In the end, the variation became known as the "Botvinnik Variation"...
