  Tabanus: Daily News (London), 22 September 1905, p. 9:

<CHICKEN-HEARTED CHESS MEN. As an outcome of the recent National Chess Congress at Southport several ladies sought membership of the local club, but admission was refused them by the casting vote of the chairman, who thought it unsafe to introduce a bone of contention in the club. Mr. Davies, protesting against the proposal at the annual meeting, feared that ladies might suggest a chess dance in winter and a chess picnic in summer. Mr. Knowlson said gentlemen were a chicken-hearted lot if the presence of ladies drove them away from chess.>
