United States Championship (1981) |
"Yasser Seirawan of Seattle and Walter Browne of Berkeley, Calif., tied for first place in the 15-player invitational United States Chess Championship here with 9-5 scores. Each was awarded $4,500 and qualified for the interzonal competitions next year, the second stage of trials for the 1984 world championship. Lubomir Kavalek of Reston, Va.; Larry Christiansen of Modesto Calif., and Samuel Reshevsky of Spring Valley, N.Y., tied for second place with 8 1/2-5 1/2 scores to win $2,000 each. Since the United States is allotted only three entrants in the interzonal competition, the two <sic> will meet in a Zonal Playoff (1981) for the remaining place." The New York Times, July 31, 1981, Section C, p. 21.

Nov-22-22 | | Ninas Husband: Thank you to whoever set up this game collection. For what it is worth, the 1977 and the 1960-61 US Championships are still missing game collections. There may be others, I have not yet had time to check. But, thanks again! :) |
|
Nov-22-22 | | Ninas Husband: This tournament was held in South Bend, IN. Maybe someone should write a tournament book about this. It should be called. "Just Around the Corner from the Touchdown Jesus". :) |
|
Nov-28-22 | | Ninas Husband: Let me correct myself, the 1960-61 championship has a page, but it is missing 10 games, and does not have either a crosstable or even final standings. It is the 1965 championship that does not have a games collection. |
